CHESTNUT TREES

Chestnut trees grow quickly into a beautiful spreading tree and bear nuts much earlier than other tree nuts.  Before the invasive fungal disease chestnut blight, the american chestnut dominated large swaths of the northeast forests, and provided a huge crop of nuts each year that was a major food source for wildlife, people, and livestock.   Our ecosystems still have an unfilled gap 100 years later which we can fill by planting blight resistant chestnuts in our landscapes!   There are several species of chestnut which have been bred by people around the world, and hybridized.   We sell seedling and grafted chestnuts.   Chestnuts come relatively true to from seed from named cultivars, but not every tree will be as productive as the cultivar.   Grafted trees are true to type, and can begin bearing in 3-5 years whereas seedlings will  take a couple years more. Plant at least two cultivars or seedlings for pollination.   Chestnuts are wind pollinated
