Fig trees are easy and fast growing. They start fruiting right away and fruit on new growth. They are hardy planted in the ground in zone 7, but the roots will survive even zone 5 winters and they will resprout but seldom ripen fruit the year after getting killed back. Fig lovers have come up with creative ways to protect them in place, but most northern growers grow figs in pots as a patio plant, and stash them out of the way when they are dormant, when they need to stay above about 15 deg. F and don't need light or frequent watering. Depending on the size of pot, you can maintain them from 2 - 6 feet tall and they fruit well. They do very well in a greenhouse. They are not bothered by pests. In our experience these are all equally hardy, as is chicago hardy, which we trialed but found to have poor fruit quality. Figs do not require a pollinator.
